Decluttering, just a trend?

Geez you watch one decluttering video on TikTok or Instagram and now your explore page has been blown up with minimalism profiles. Seems to be the latest millennial mom trend, right?

It may be a trend, Or maybe many moms are starting to realize the benefits of having less. Let’s talk about some of these benefits.

1. First of all , TIMEEEEEE!

I cannot preach this enough. How much time do you spend everyday doing all of the following?

a) dishes

b) laundry

c) picking up toys

d) looking for lost items

e) deciding what to wear

f) fighting with your child or spouse to pick up after themselves..

That's just to name a few ways that our crap takes our time. The more you have, the more time you will spend doing all of this. Get rid of the stuff, and you’ll spend less time maintaining, cleaning, picking up and looking for it. It’s basic math.

2. Keeping up with housework.

Let me ask you this? When’s the last time you were completely caught up on laundry? (Wait did she really just ask me that???) Because I can remember multiple times the past couple months when I’ve had alllll my laundry done. (Except sheets, because I loathe remaking the bed)

This isn’t meant to be a flex to shame you. The point is it feels like TOO MUCH for you to keep up with, because IT IS too much. The more you have, the longer your to-do list is. I’m a mom, so I know the to-do list will never end, but having less can make that to do list a heck of a lot shorter.

3. Mental peace

I’m sure this is one you’ve seen preached all over social media. Then you see these vanilla homes with no personality. I’m not telling you to go to that extreme and get rid of everything that you enjoy or have a sad beige home, but seriously, having less does wonders for calming visual overstimulation.

4. Saving money.

How many times has your husband bought a new tool because he couldn’t find the one he needed? Or how many times have you shopped a sale, then realized you already had a shirt almost EXACTLY like the one you just bought? Or you bought your child a toy, that they already have 13 very similar to?

When you declutter, you’ll have better awareness of what you own. It will be easier to find things. Both of these will help you to shop smarter, thus saving you money.

I could go on and on, but I won’t. So is decluttering a trend? No. It’s a movement of people waking up to the benefits of a life with less.
